The 2024 Olympics happened from July 26 to August 11 in Paris, France. In this article, we’ll be covering gymnastics, swimming, basketball, boxing, beach volleyball, and water polo. These sports are some of the most popular and/or most watched sports during the Olympics this year. Gymnastics is one of the most popular sports in the Olympics. Artistic gymnastics happened at the Bercy Arena in Paris. The first gymnastics competition in the Olympics was introduced in 1898; ever since then, gymnastics has been included in the Olympics. Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, and Hezley Rivera were the contestants for this year’s women’s gymnastics. One of the most famous women gymnasts is Simone Biles. Biles started gymnastics at 6 and has continued the sport. Biles had gained a lot of attention over the years from many people around the world. This year, she won a gold medal in the 2024 Olympics for gymnastics.
This year’s swimming competition was held from July 27 to August 9. This event was held at Paris La Défense Arena. The swimming program consisted of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, relays, marathon, and medley. After hours of waiting, on July 17 at 12:44, the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay final started. The U.S put up an outstanding battle against the other countries they had to face, and were able to tire out their competitors and win first place! The 400m individual medley final began at 11:30 on July 28. Leon Marchand from France won first place with his time of 4:02.95. Matsushita Tomoyuki won second place with 4:08.62, and Carson Foster from the U.S placed 3rd with 4:08.66. Then, at 12:44, the 100m breaststroke final commenced. With this being a very close and intense game, Nicolo Martinenghi from Italy won first place with his time being 59.03. Adam Peaty from Britain and Nic Fink from the U.S both placed 2nd with 59.05. They didn’t give anyone 3rd place and went on to give 4th place to Melvin Imoudu from Germany. The men’s swimming continues until the 9th of August. The winning team was the United States, mainly from the huge wins from Bobby Finke.
The men’s Basketball started on July 27 and ended on August 10. The quarter finals were on August 6 at 2 p.m. Germany ended up winning against Greece with 76-63. The next game started at 5:30. Australia and Serbia were competing with each other. Serbia won with a score of 95-90. The last game for the quarter finals was with Canada and France. France won 82-73. The semi-finals started on August 8. The first game was at 8:30 and was Germany versus France. France won the round with 73-69. The following game started at noon with the United States and Serbia competing. The U.S won by 4 points with 95-91. The finals were on August 10, which is the last day of the game. The first game was against Germany and Serbia. Serbia ended up winning with the score being 93-83. The last game was with the US and France. The US ended up winning against France, 98-87. In all, the United States ended up winning this year’s 2024 men’s basketball Olympics, and a great thank you to Stephen Curry for scoring the most points for their team.

To start with, the #7 most popular sports, men’s and women’s boxing, took place from July 27 to August 10, 2024 . It consisted of 13 events, 7 men and 6 women. The competitors were 248 from 68 different nations! The events were held at the North Paris Arena and the Roland Garros stadium. At these events, every one of the men and women athletes put on an outstanding show. Many women boxers won medals, specifically Wu Yu from China won first place against 2020 silver medal winner Buse Naz Cakiroglu from Turkey. Wu Yu won by making Naz fall over from Wu Yu’s first-round attack! Which left the audience riled up and in shock, and energetic for the next round. There were many other amazing performances, and in the end, Uzbekistan and China took the win this 2024. Unfortunately, due controversy of the IOC and boxing in the Olympics, boxing will not be making a return for the 2028 Olympics. Beach volleyball, the 6th most popular Olympic sport, took place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, at the Eiffel Tower Stadium in the French capital, Paris, France. The top players who made an outstanding show and who improved from the last Olympics were Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Edward Duda Santos Lisboa from Brazil. This duo both won gold medals in beach volleyball, winning against Canada on Friday, August 9, 2024. Brazil stood their ground and finally wore out Canada and won by the third set score 2-1! Second place went to Mariafe Artacho Del Dolar and Taliqua Clancy from Australia. One conflict that occurred was that Canada and Brazil got into a heated argument, leading to both teams approaching the net; that argument quickly ended, and both teams, in the end, congratulated each other for the win.
Finally, for our last sport, men’s water polo, ranked #5 in the most popular Olympic sports, this sport consists of competitors swimming around in a poo,l passing the ball to teammates by throwing, it and attempting to make it into the goal. This year’s 2024 water polo was held at Paris la Defense Arena, the largest indoor pool in Paris. The dates for this event were from July 27 to August 11. Many countries competed, but only a few won. The 3 teams that won were Serbia in first place, Croatia in second place, and the United States in third place. On the last day of the Olympics, Serbia won their 3rd gold medal in 3 years straight with a 13-11 win over Croatia. The U.S won their bronze medal for the first time in 16 years! Hungary was very close to winning but the u.s saved the second set, the players of this years 2024 olympics for the united states goes to Alex Bowen and Hannes daube both scored extra player goals and tied the score multiple times, in the end the united states won against hungary with a final score of 11-8! Paris has also hosted 3 years in the Olympics in the years 1900, 1924, and 2024. The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, which will mark its 3rd time being held in this city. Some of the most famous venues that the Olympics have been in are the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Olympiastadion in Berlin, and the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens (sportstar.thehindu.com). These are just some of the very many well-known venues that the Olympics have been hosted in. These venues are particularly popular for their significance in the games that were held in those venues. The L.A. Memorial Coliseum is best known for hosting the Olympics twice and will be hosting again in 2028. Olympistadion in Berlin is known mainly because it was built especially for the 1936 games and the Nazi government’s role in hosting the games. Lastly, the Panathenaic stadium in Athens is popular for its ancient build and for hosting one of the first modern Olympic games. The most-watched Olympic Games were in 199,6, whicwereas in Atlanta in the Centennial Olympic Stadium. On average, this game was said to be watched by around 33 million people in America. It was also stated that about 39.7 million views around the world were watching and attending this game (frontofficesports.com). This game was so popular because of the strong competition they had, and the art and culture that were incorporated into this event. Many famous events have happened over the years, but by far, this might have been one of the most popular and most viewed Olympic Games of all time.
In 2028, the next Olympic Games will take place summer and will be hosted by Los Angeles, California This would mark the third time that Los Angeles has hosted an Olympic Games So far, what we know about the 2028 Olympics is that it will be scheduled to take place from July 14–30, 2028. Construction had already started way before the 2024 Olympics took place; construction for the 2028 Olympics began in early 2023. 28’s Olympics is sure to be one worth waiting for because they will be adding a variety of new sports! The new sports they will be adding will be Flag football, baseball/softball, lacrosse, and cricket, which have not been at the Olympic Games in over 100 years! The sport of squash, which appeared in 2018 in Buenos Aires as a demonstration at the Youth Olympic Games, will also be added. Squash is a racket sport played by two people within four enclosed walls. The first player to reach a score of 11 wins a game, and the first to win three games wins the whole match. Unfortunately, the sports that will not be making a return are tug of war, break dancing, boxing, and possibly weightlifting, but it is still to be decided.
