The 2025-2026 School year will implement a new system for HOWL. This will include some new rules and regulations like having a mandatory HOWL for students with a GPA of 2.50 or lower. HOWL will also be mandatory for everyone every Monday. This will also affect the teachers, who will have to attend weekly meetings every Friday.
We first interviewed a senior, Angel Torres. We asked him about his opinions on the new HOWL system for next year. He says it’s an understandable move to make HOWL mandatory for people with a GPA 2.5 or lower because, on average, many of the students with that GPA have D’s and C’s, and HOWL can bring their grades up. He thinks many students often ditch and are absent during HOWL, and making it mandatory and enforcing it for students will get rid of a lot of the absences. He also mentioned the implementation of fences around the school and how it would be safer for students on campus. We mentioned that the
The next person we interviewed was another senior, Alize Galvan. She doesn’t have HOWL currently, and she thinks the new HOWL system would be a good implementation for the school since a lot of students miss HOWL and having stricter rules would bring grades up. She feels like the school is right for doing this because the absences and tardiness are high, but she also thinks that this will heavily put a burden on the teachers since they have to take up time of their lunch to teach students for an extra 30 minutes. She believes that stricter consequences can lead to fewer absences during HOWL.
We next interviewed one of the JROTC instructors, Colonel Miller. He currently teaches HOWL every day. He doesn’t see a problem with it since he already has HOWL every day, but he does notice a lot of students are not located to the right classes. He teaches math, but many of his students in HOWL do not have any problems with their math class, so he is left with nothing to teach. A lot of the students in his class don’t learn anything new and just see it as a punishment. Stricter HOWL with a more specialized system will help a lot of students get better grades. He does believe this new system will make a lot of teachers disgruntled since they’ll have to work harder. He believes that even though it might help with grades, it won’t fix the absence problem. “If students do not want to learn, they won’t”. He also thinks the meetings every Friday will be unrealistic since every teacher has to vote on it.
In conclusion, HOWL would help many students who want to better their grades, but it would not change anything for students who do not want to. It would bring more work for teachers and more guidelines for students. Hopefully, many good changes will be made without the expense of students or teachers.
