The Buena Park Frosh Boys’ Basketball team took on Aliso Niguel in a game where the Coyotes struggled to overcome the strong defensive pressure from Aliso Niguel. The Coyotes had some players from JV play to help out the frosh team but it still wasn’t enough. The game tipped off later than usual and Buena Park got off to a hot start with Daniel Flores hitting a three-pointer, followed by a layup from Kevin Garcia to take a 5-0 lead. However, Aliso Niguel responded with a 15-0 run to close out the first quarter, leaving Buena Park trailing 15-5.
The second quarter was Buena Park’s best quarter in terms of offense, with point guard Donovan Nguyen scoring the most for the Coyotes. Nguyen scored 7 points in the quarter, going 2-for-2 at the free-throw line, hitting a pull-up three-pointer, and a fastbreak layup. Despite the strong effort, Aliso Niguel maintained a strong lead heading into halftime.
Aliso Niguel’s full-court press continued to make Buena Park struggle throughout the game, making it difficult for the Coyotes to advance the ball past halfcourt. In the third quarter, Buena Park scored just five points, while Aliso Niguel’s offense got them past 50 team points, extending their lead to 54-23 by the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, with the game out of reach, Aliso Niguel switched to a 3-2 zone defense which made it easier for the Coyotes to advance the ball. The Coyotes managed to get five more points, and the game ended in a 28-74 loss for Buena Park.
After the game, we spoke with Donovan Nguyen, who reflected on his experience playing with the frosh team compared to playing on JV. “Playing with the freshmen was nothing too different than on JV, and team chemistry was the only thing really missing from the team,” Nguyen said. “This was the first game that I’ve played with them, and I feel like we can be more connected as time goes on.” Despite the loss, Nguyen finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Even though this was a huge loss for BP, the Coyotes showed lots of potential and will look to improve as the season continues. Don’t forget to check the calendar to come to support your Coyotes at The Den!
