Hey Coyotes, Our athletic programs at Buena Park High School have been very successful over the years. Last year our coyotes had 6+ programs make it into CIF. 4 of our programs made it into the CIF semifinals. Those sports are Men’s Soccer, Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ Baseball, and Girls Water Polo. The coyotes are putting in all the work behind the scenes. We have introduced programs like Speed and Agility and Weight Room from House of Powers. They help our programs all get faster, stronger, and smarter together. Coach Terry, our newly introduced athletic director, has done much for our programs. He arrived at Buena Park High School in 2022 and since then we have seen a lot of growth in our athletic programs not just on the field but most importantly academically as well. The GPA of our athletic coyotes has gone up a lot. The tutoring hours have led the coyotes to help grow their education grades and overall GPA, as students here at Buena Park High School. For example, One sport that has shown this is Girls’ Basketball. They have demonstrated what true scholar-athletes are by having the top GPA of the first grading period with a 3.87 average GPA!
Boys Soccer- The records for our soccer coyotes have gone up and up each year from the 2021-2022 season our coyotes had a rough season going 3-10-5 struggling but working hard that year. The following year 2022-2023 our soccer program rose going 13-8-2 making it into CIF for the first time in many years giving it their all by making history. Next, we have one of the best seasons in 2023-2024 where our Coyotes go 17-8-3 making it into the CIF semifinals for the first time in the Soccer program history. As well, they started this year with a summer league title and seek more success for the league, tournaments, and CIF.
When Coach Ursua was asked how she motivated her players to play their best, she said “I pray with them, have motivational talks with them, before, during the game, afterward, do fun workouts to get them prepared and believing in them, just letting them know how much I believe in and care about them.” Also, Coach Ursua was asked how she felt about the guys making a historic run in CIF last year she said, “It was amazing, It was absolutely amazing, It felt like God was with us all the time. I felt like the boys just broke down a lot of negative stereotypes about them, and we ended the freeway league doing the best out of every team in CIF and it was just like a dream come true.”
Girls Basketball- The Girls’s Basketball team has improved drastically in the span of 2 years and is expected to keep it going this season too. In the 2020-2021 season, the Lady Coyotes went 6-8 and placed 4th place in the league. The following year in the 2021-2022 season, the lady coyotes improved their record a lot and improved their record to 25-8 not only making CIF for the first time in a long time but also making it to State for the first time in the program’s history. The next year for the 2022-2023 season, The lady coyotes built off their success from last year by going 22-11 overall, going undefeated in league for the first time, making it to semi-finals in CIF, and making it to state. We are looking forward to what our lady coyotes can accomplish this upcoming season this year.
Coach Wiley was asked how he felt about his team making CIF last year and he said, we expected to make it. we put in a lot of work. so we expected to kind of go far.” He was also asked what kind of work the girls are putting in this year to make it again and he said, “ Well they practice twice a day, so we come in the morning, 7 am they have a morning before school practice, and then we practice at the end of the day. And then we scrimmage pretty good teams on the weekend right now, so we should be ready since they’re averaging more than 10 practices a week. “
Football- The Buena Park Coyote Football program has had its rise to the top of its levels in recent years. In 2021-2022 our coyotes had a rough patch going 0-10 but worked hard each day to get better and improve altogether. Then comes the 2022-2023 season and we pick up a few wins and go 3-7 and still grow as a program for the success that’s yet to come. Going into one of our best seasons in a while in our 2023-2024 season the coyotes go 6-6 picking up double the seasons from the previous year and making it to the CIF quarterfinals which was a big thing for our program, catching the eyes of many people with some of our players making it into all-star teams. This year in the 2024-2025 season our very own coyotes did their best and went 4-6 having a well and hard fought season enjoying time as not only a team but as a coyote family.
When asked about how he felt about the team making CIF last season, Coach O said, “ The boys put a lot of hard work in, a lot of dedication. They showed a lot of perseverance last year, even through some of the tough times, but definitely did everything they were supposed to do to advance into the CIF southern section playoffs.” He was also asked if he sees CIF again in the future and he said “ Yes, I do. We were very young this year, and we just missed it. That very last game we played against Woodbridge, we had a win to get in, but unfortunately, didn’t go our way, and that was with us being one of the heavy sophomores and juniors. Next year, we’ll have a lot of seniors and juniors with more experience. So I definitely see them being successful and getting over the hump and getting into CIF.”
Boys Baseball- Boys Baseball has improved a lot these past years too. In the 2021-2022 season, our baseball team had a rough season going 6-22 overall and having a 1-15 record in league. The coyotes would persevere to have a better season the following year. They would double their wins in the 2022-2023 season going 13-15 and 2-8 in the league. With this improving record, the Coyotes were ready to build off it for the upcoming season. The 2023-2024 season was among the most successful in the program’s history. They had one of their best records going 24-7 and getting 2nd place in the league, qualifying for CIF for the first time in 20 years! The hard work paid off as they broke the school record for most wins in a single season which was held by the 1993 BPHS Coyote team. Even though their CIF campaign ended in the Semi-finals, This team made history and is ready to make this upcoming season even more historic and special.
Coach Cody was asked, “What kind of work did they put in to make it to CIF last year”, and he said, “ It took countless hours of preparation, practice, weight lifting, and staying on top of grades.“ He was also asked if he feels that the guys are putting in the work this year to make it to CIF again“ and he said, “I feel that this year’s group is more driven, more hard-working, as crazy as that sounds, and one of the reasons why is because we lost so many seniors and so many guys have to step up now. So I do see CIF in our future, and I’m hoping we can hang a league banner.”
