Hey Coyotes, During the month of october we interviewed our Buena Park Dance Company (BPDC) Coach Mrs. Klaus, Our dance Cabinet Captains, and many Team Members. We wanted to do a deep dive on this team after seeing a successful First competition and seeing them taking the win for the 2023-2024 school year.
Before we talk about how the interviews went, let’s talk about what BPDC is. Buena Park Dance Company is our school’s amazing dance team that always does a great job at putting on awesome performances. The team always knows how to get the crowds hyped and get people to be more interacted with the assemblies, football games, basketball games, and more.
Now let’s get on to the interviews!
Crystal Zavala started by asking Mrs. Klaus “How long ago did you take over dance company?”
Mrs. Klaus said “I took over dance company seven years ago which was when I started here at Buena Park, so it was about 2018 or 2019.”
Crystal then asked “What changes have you made to the program?”
Mrs. Klaus goes on by saying “I think the changes that I’ve made to the program is just upping the level of the skills and of grades. Little adjustments like that just to make it so that school is a priority but so is dance so it made it a harder team to be a part of, it’s more exclusive instead of it just being anyone can join.”
Finally, Crystal asked “Was it hard to get the girls where they are today?”
Mrs. Klaus said “It’s not that it’s been hard, it’s just, it’s a lot of work for everyone. Not gonna lie, my first year here it’s always when someone new takes over the program there’s always pushback because it’s something different than what’s been done before and everybody is always used to ‘It’s always been this, it’s always been this’ so, it was just trying to get the seniors of my first year here onboard with me and my ideas and what I wanted to do with the program but as soon as they started seeing the reaction of their peers, the crowds while they were performing, then they started enjoying it more and liking it, and trusting me more which is what I needed to get their trust and then we took off from there!”
After interviewing Mrs. Klaus and getting an understanding of how being the coach for Dance Company is for her, we decided to interview the Dance Company Cabinet members to get their perspective of what it’s like to be on the team. We interviewed Cabinet members Alyssa Moreno-Montes, Ariana Magana, & Edward Luna and here’s how it went!
Crystal started off by asking “How is dance cabinet chosent?”
Alyssa said “We had to make a dance, a one minute dance and then teach it to the class.”
Ariana said “We also had to do a solo and show it in front of everyone.”
Edward said “We also had to make a one minute speech and present it to everyone on why we want to be cabinet.”
Finally, Crystal asked “What are skills you need to have to make dance company?”
ALyssa says “You have to bring positive energy to the team.”
Ariana says “You also have to have good technique.”
Edward adds “and bring dedication and good grades and point your toes.”
After interviewing BPDC’s Cabinet members, we now have a better understanding of what it’s like to be on the team, what skills are needed for a dance company, and a little bit of how the program is run. The dance team should very much be considered a sport with how much time and dedication these students put into the team while managing school. Thank you for reading Coyotes and have an amazing halloween!
