This week we watched our Varsity Girls Flag Football Team play against Fullerton High School. They unfortunately lost 12-31 , but still tried their best!
While watching the game, we got to interview some students: Samira Salim, Janelle Valera, Lily Phillips, and Lovely Brown.
We started off by asking Freshman Samira Salim “What’s one challenge you had at the beginning of the year that you’ve improved on?” She answered with “One challenge I had in the beginning of season that I’ve improved on was having patience and not getting upset when making mistakes” Her favorite part about playing flag football is the friendships she has made and having fun no matter the scoreboard. One thing she has learned while being in flag football was stepping out of her comfort zone isn’t always bad and to put yourself out there.
The next person We interviewed was Junior Janelle Valera. We started off by asking her, what inspired her to join flag football? She said she “had never joined a sport before flag football so when Coach Learn was like come try out and made me feel welcome right away, it pushed me to try out and be a part of the history being made at Buena Park High School. I also saw it as an opportunity to get to know more people because I had transferred from another school and didn’t know many people.” The next question We asked her was “What’s one challenge you had at the beginning of flag football that you’ve improved on?” She said “ This is funny because I actually had trouble catching the ball which is one of the biggest factors of flag football. Now I’m way better at catching while running routes so I’m glad I’ve improved a lot.” Janelle’s goal was to be more involved with school. She hoped to gain new friendships and connections. Now that season is over she feels like that has somewhat happened and is happy with the outcome that flag football has brought her.
We then asked Junior Lily Phillips, what was one goal that she wished to accomplish at the end of the year with flag football? She said “Best states and new sense of confidence”. Lily’s favorite part about playing flag football is pushing herself and challenging her skills to become a better player. The next question I asked her was “What inspired you to join flag football?” She said “I knew I would enjoy it and I knew I could have a fresh start on another team creating deeper bonds with my classmates and associates”.
The last person we interviewed was Freshman Lovely Brown. She’s been doing flag football since she was 6, so it’s just always been her passion. Her favorite part about being on the team is that she can let out all of her anger on the field and come back to school and feel relaxed. I asked her “What’s one thing you’ve learned from being in flag football?” She said “I’ve learnt a new structure, new plans, a new position”.
We can’t wait next year for the coyotes to play another season of Flag Football. Good Luck Coyotes!
