Buena Park High School has a diverse group of students and staff. Some are more motivated than others. Other students are smarter but more quiet. Some students are more active and participate more but are not as academic. We want to know which type of student the teachers favor.
We started by interviewing Abraham Pacas, a Buena Park high school student. When asked if he thinks teachers have favorite students he said yes because some treat their teachers better. He thinks teachers don’t really understand you better if you’re closer to them but, believes they would be more considerate. His favorite teacher is Mr Dean because “he has good stories.”
We then interviewed Jonny Montes, another student. He thinks teachers definitely have favorite students because some students are nice and some are mean. His favorite teacher is Mrs Bently because he thinks she is nice.
The last student we interviewed was Layla Chong. She believes teachers have favorite students because some students have more work ethic, and it depends on a student’s attitude. She likes all her teachers equally and believes teachers understand you better if you’re closer to them.
Mrs. Volen is the first teacher we interviewed, she is a math and business finance teacher. She claimed she doesn’t have a favorite student but her favorite students would be her link crew students. We asked her if it’s normal for teachers to have favorites and she responded, “I don’t think so, but I could be wrong because people often ask me if I have a favorite kid and I would say I don’t. Maybe I’m not the majority.” She believes students should be rewarded for good behavior but they should also be expected to be a good student.
The second teacher we interviewed was Mrs. Rodriguez Kam. She loves all her students but appreciates a student who “works hard, is willing to ask questions, and is kind”. She thinks good behavior should always be rewarded and expected. She thinks it is normal to have a favorite student if you can connect with them more personally.
Ms. DeLeon is the last teacher we interviewed. She says for a student to be considered one of her favorites, they would need great attitude, and motivation, and they don’t need to be the smartest, just to be positive. She also believes good behavior should be expected because it stems from respect and foundations from home. She would rather not reward something that should be expected. She also believes it is normal to have favorites and least favorites because everyone has students that brighten their day and some students can make their day more harder and complex.
In conclusion, teachers prefer students who are ready to learn and have a positive attitude, it doesn’t matter if theyre not as academic as other students, but as long as they have an open mind and try their best to withhold information, teachers would always have their day brightened up by them. Students also believe that the nicer you are to a teacher, the more the teacher and the student can connect and have a better working environment in the classroom.
